Working from home has become the norm because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Most of us are now working from home to help stop the spread of the virus, and the reality is that many of us do not have the proper setting in our home for a comfortable office. This has led many of us to sit on the couch with our laptops and has caused us to slump over our computers while sitting on a kitchen stool.

Makeshift home offices may allow us to get our work done, but it can take a toll on our bodies and cause aches and pains. We’ve all had to improvise, but we need to be careful because these home offices can have negative effects on our bodies. You may experience neck pain and back pain as a result, so you need to take a look at your home set-up to see how you can improve it. A poor workstation can lead to injury and pain, so you need to invest in a good chair that can adjust to your height so that you maintain proper posture instead of having to bend over. An ergonomic set-up will reduce the chances of strains and sprains and shoulder impingement, which can cause headaches.

To prevent these things from happening, you need to make a few adjustments to your workspace. You may need to get creative, so go ahead and stack up your old books to elevate the height of your laptop. This will prevent you from having to slouch forward and will reduce the chances of both neck and back pain. You should also contact your employer to see if they can provide you with additional equipment to make your set-up more comfortable. They will likely help you in this regard because they will want employees to maintain their productivity.

In addition to improving your at-home work set-up, you need to incorporate movement into your day because this, too, will make a positive difference and will prevent aches and pains. When people work from home, they do not move as much, and this will take a toll on your health, so you need to move and must get some fresh air. Take a break once in a while and move away from your home office to step outside if possible. Walking from your kitchen to your living room does not count, so you need to make the effort to ensure your body gets enough movement.

Working from home is our new normal, so if you have the means, invest in a proper work set-up and if this type of upgrade is not a possibility, try doing simple exercises at home that don’t require any equipment.
